Footprints in the Sand

There is an episode of The Simpsons in which an old lady is speaking at a kindergarten commencement (oddly, there are such ceremonies, and I have suffered through them). She passionately tells the kids to "seize the day" as life passes so quickly; naturally the kids are bewildered. And so it is at college graduations as well. The carpe diem thing seems to make little impression, as it is but May and December seems so far away. Some are earnest in hoping to make a contribution; others hope to make a million and be at the beach by noon. Whether it's wine, women and song or fame and fortune, the future seems boundless and bountiful, and hope springs eternal.
