Excuses

It's another bad season for grandmothers. We go through a lot of them around test time. It's amazing the number and type of excuses you get from students. Even more amazing is that they feel the need to give them. My particular favorite excuse for missing a test was amnesia, and the kid had a doctor's note!

I know, there are some professors who do not treat you like adults, who have so little confidence in you or perhaps their teaching abilities that they have to use carrots and sticks (that would be points given or points taken away) to get you to come to class (prepared) and contribute. But I like to think that most of us do the best we can to motivate you in bringing whatever knowledge, creativity, sensitivity, and passion we have to the classroom. You decide if it's worth your while to attend, contribute, work, and learn. If you do not wish to, then don't. You may spend your tuition dollars as you like, use your youth as you choose, and have the right to succeed or fail. While we appreciate the courtesy, you really don't have to make excuses for missing class. And if you miss a test, take the responsibility for doing so.
