Status Symbols

What are the new status symbols?  We all know the traditional status symbols.  Once upon a time they were cars, and people were willing to pay an extra $25,000 for a car that had a peace symbol on the hood (Mercedes, for the youngsters).  Then, oddly, the brand name of the bottled water seemed to matter to some.  Of course clothing has always had it's over-priced labels, and the Coach fad a several years ago was a riot considering the items only cost a few dollars each to produce.  But the short-term Tommy Bahamas and long term Vuittons are nothing new. Then there were the "in" beers for a while, followed by the flavored vodkas (isn't the whole point of vodka that it's tasteless) and "top shelf" liquors, but these all seem to have limited appeal to limited people (not just limited numbers of people, but limited people).  Status sneakers seem to have died down some, as has iAnything (2 million people have preordered the iPhone 5; how exclusive can it be?)  I know that there are subgroups with their own status cultures.  For example, teenagers have their popular stores, which seem to rotate (e.g., Hollister at the moment), young mothers their exclusive baby goods (like strollers) and housewives their expensive kitchen items and appliances.  But being a guy who doesn't wear brands or care too much about them, I sure that I'm pretty clueless as to what's new in constituting status these days.  Anybody know?
